In the summer of 2008 Doug Graves made a major life change. He retired from the aerospace industry, sold his house, and moved from Seattle to France to make wine. He became the new owner of Mas de la Lionne, a small wine domaine in the Cotes du Rhone, which produced red and rose wines. As an American winemaker living in the Cotes du Rhone, Doug brings a unique perspective to the region and also a unique palate to the making of the wines. It all began when Doug and his wife Debbie took their first “Wine Trip” to France in 1995. For years they were always dreaming about the one day they might just try to get to the Rhone Valley - permanently.
Doug decided to take up winemaking as a hobby. His first vintage was in 2001, making a small quantity in his garage to gain a better understanding of the entire wine-making process. He founded GRAVES CELLARS in Seattle in 2005, making Walla Walla Valley Syrahs. In 2006 I engaged (via the internet) with a local vineyard real estate agent to see if I could make it come true. In November of 2007, Doug got an email from a real estate agent with a new listing in France - Mas de la Lionne; a wine domaine with a vineyard (10 acres), working winery with all the equipment, and a house…so on Independence Day – 14 July Doug and Debbie jumped immediately into the farming, harvesting and winemaking tasks leading to the first release – Cotes du Rhone 2008.
Doug also has a passion for sharing his knowledge of the region, and can take you on a tour - to see not only Mas de la Lionne but other excellent vineyards in the area. You can contact Doug here.
