THE WINES

We will be pairing with three exceptional wines, two artisanal cheeses, and some delicious other curated tidbits. The wines will ship from WineVIP in California via the service you select at checkout. The food packages will be shipped from New Orleans via FedEx Second-Day Air to ensure freshness.

BERNIER LOIRE VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC – FRANCE

This steely-textured Sauvignon Blanc has all the classic notes of citrusy grapefruit and light herbaceousness with a solid mineral backbone. Long one of the “go-to” food and wine pairings, Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc and Loire Valley goat’s cheese is truly a feast

for the senses.

MARQUES DE CACERES CAVA BRUT – SPAIN

Built upon the classic Cava varieties, this bone-dry sparkler presents delicate flavors and aromas of apple and white flowers with a hint of brioche from its eleven months of lees ageing. The fine bubbles and bright acidity bring a nimble, nuanced character to both cheese pairings.

MATTES-SABRAN CORBIÈRES ROUGE – LANGUEDOC

For our final pairing, we’re straddling the border of France and Spain, where the cultures, cuisines, and grape varieties have overlapped for centuries. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, this wine explodes with aromas of blackberry, licorice, and Asian five spice. The palate is rewarded with juicy, concentrated red and black plums, presented against a backdrop of smooth tannins. Perfect for our Spanish Manchego.

COCHON | BUTCHER CHARCUTERIE

“Cochon Butcher uses only all-natural meats and whole hogs from local and organic farms. Working with Blake and Bill Ryles for over a decade together we have created a terminal cross breed of Berkshire Blue hogs used for our meats. Our cured meats, sausages and fresh cuts are made and cured in-house, right here in New Orleans, using old world traditions.”

SPANISH HONEY

Cave paintings have established that honey has been collected from kept bees in Spain for more than 9,000 years—the oldest record of beekeeping on the planet.

TRÉSORS GOURMANDS SEL DE GUÉRANDE CRACKERS

“These little bite sized waffle crackers might be the perfect cracker! Light enough to not overpower your topping, but just the right thickness to not fall apart while you dress it with your favorite spread. Nestled in the heart of French Flanders in Erquinghem-Lys near Lille, Trésors Gourmands has been producing Northern France’s distinctive waffle- style crackers for more than 16 years.”

At this Wine and Cheese Tasting PARTY you will get to know winemakers and cheesemakers from all over the world, while enjoying great New Orleans live music and the oversized personalities of some true New Orleanians. Did you know that just about everyone in New Orleans has a costume closet? We are ready for a party or a parade at a moment’s notice! So feel free to put on a funny hat and a feather boa, or go all-out and wear a costume that matches the theme.

This month we will take a sideways look at the history of New Orleans—is the Crescent City French or is it Spanish? Or something in-between? We probably won’t figure it out (or even really try) but we will taste some fantastic wines and cheeses from France and Spain. Our theme is THE HISTORY OF NEW ORLEANS IN WINE & CHEESE. Put on a beret or a feather boa, dress as your favorite character from the court of Louis XIII or Ferdinand and Isabella—it doesn’t matter as long as you’re ready to have some fun!. We are also thrilled to bring you, live from the stage at the world-renowned Tipitina’s, Dave Malone of The Radiators, who will funk you up with a number from his upcoming show on Tipitinas.tv.

Make sure you chill your white and sparkling wines in advance and take your cheese out of the refrigerator at least 20 minutes before the party gets started. Red wines will usually benefit from a quick chill in the refrigerator if you aren’t storing them at wine cellar temperature. You will need wine opening & food preparation tools—but you knew that didn’t you?

Most importantly, be prepared to have some fun. Because YOU are part of the show

About us

Commander’s Palace, nestled in the tree-lined Garden District, has been a New Orleans landmark since 1893. Known for the award-winning quality of its food and convivial atmosphere, the history of this famous restaurant offers a glimpse into New Orleans’ storied past and has been THE go-to destination for Haute Creole cuisine and whimsical Louisiana charm. The winner of seven James Beard Awards and Wine Spectator’s Grand Award, Commander’s Palace is a culinary legend.

Dan Davis

At the venerable Commander’s Palace in New Orleans, there is no such thing as a head sommelier. Dan Davis, the man who oversees the impressive 2,600-bottle list, is instead simply known as the “Wine Guy”—a moniker that embodies the restaurant’s philosophy of making sure guests enjoy every aspect of their dining experience without intimidation.
