Pierre & Bertrand Couly
The domaine of Pierre & Bertrand Couly sits high above the rotary as you enter Chinon like a watchtower guarding the city gates. Yet behind the red turret sits a modern, state of the art winery producing juicy, fruity, and sophisticated Cabernet Franc. Surrounded by lavish vineyards over 16 hectares of rich, chalky soil, they produce a unique Cabernet Franc with subtle tanins and rich fruit. The Chinon rosé is a blend of dryness and sweetness making it an all year round wine, not just for summertime, while Le Haute Olive is a full bodied wine for that steak or lamb dinner. All this flavor and wine enjoyment comes at very attractive prices. There are now two properties, the newest in Chinon and the original just down the road in St. Louans - both available all year round for tastings. The making of wine at Pierre & Bertrand Couly is a family affair and everyone pitches in. You can tell everyone cares.
La Haute Olive review (in French)
Produced in Chinon, by bleeding the juice from the grapes after a full night of maceration. This technique allows for the light fresh fruit flavor to migrate while leaving the boldness in the red grapes for the red wine. This rosé is then aged à la cave like white wines, which gives it a bold and smooth consistency. At this extremely low price, this is a rosé you will be drinking all summer. Just arriving now! Only 200 bottles!
Wines from a clay-silica soil, which provides very silky tannins that highlight the fruity trend in Chinon red wines, they can either be consumed young, or aged, as they gain in complexity over time
The limestone terroir brings more structure and tannins to this bold red wine typifying Cabernet Franc. Named for Vincent, the youngest son of Bertrand for his participation in creating this long lasting red. 5-12 years ageing potential.
East of Chinon, on the hillside where La Haute Olive is coming from, the soil - ancient limestone - produces wines of great finesse and can age for years. The 2014 vintage reveals a lot of charm. This wine is the top of the line for the winery, and it merits the status. If you are a Cab Franc fan, this is for you.
The haut de gamme (top of the line) at the Couly estate, La Haute Olive delivers great, big red wine taste with a smoothness that makes this a favorite of so many. If you care to impress, bring this wine as a gift or to adorn your Thanksgiving or holiday dinner table. If you are a Cab Franc fan, this is for you.
