Chateau de Targé

In 1655, the personal secretary of the king Louis XIV of France built a hunting place near the forests of the Royal Abbey. Since then, the property stayed in the Pisani-Ferry family, and each generation participated to its construction and its reputation. Edouard Pisani-Ferry, agricultural engineer in winemaking, inherited the Château in 1976. He started by building a modern wine storehouse with thermo-regulated tanks, and then in the 90’s expanded the vineyard by buying and exchanging blocks in order to have the quality he wanted. He also started in this period to have environment-friendly ways of growing the vines and making the wine. Since 2000, he is a member of the Terra Vitis organization, which makes an annual control on the whole process.

In 1998, “Les Fresnettes” (White Saumur Blanc) joined the classics – Traditional Cuvée and Cuvée Ferry (Red Saumur-Champigny). In 2004, Quintessence de Targé was begun (AOC Saumur-Champigny) with the advices of one of the greatest French winemakers, Pierre Seillan. Quintessence has already received five medals out of the three first vintages. Decorator Daniel Kiener has development the gîte de charme of the property, which since 2008 permits to guests to stay and discovery the estate and the region.

These amazing troglodyte cellars built into the limestone hills in Saumur keep the wines at the perfect temperature all year round

Now's the time to take advantage of one our best white wines. Bottled in 2009, it's now at its peak and we want to make sure this is drunk now. We loved this Chenin Blanc because it was so well balanced - dry yet sweet and loads of fruit. No wonder its a medal collector. Maybe it was the French oak. It had aromas of citrus, peach, and white fruits. Mix this wine into your rotation of Chardonnays and you'll appreciate both even more. A truly unique wine.
